Adrian Newey, a true icon in Formula 1 design, has shared the fascinating story behind his creation of the AMR26, Aston Martin's 2026 concept car. This revelation comes after his departure from Red Bull, a move that sparked curiosity and anticipation in the F1 community.
The Journey to Aston Martin
Newey's transition began in 2024 when he announced his departure from Red Bull. After sealing a deal with Aston Martin in September, he remained with Red Bull until his gardening leave commenced in March 2025, giving him time to reflect and strategize before joining his new team.
The AMR26, with its bold design and unique features, has already turned heads since its unveiling at the Barcelona test. Newey reveals that the car's success isn't hinged on any single element, but rather a 'holistic approach' where every component works in harmony.

Newey explains that the concept evolved during his break between teams. "The philosophy really came to me during my gardening leave. I joined Aston Martin on March 2nd but was on leave from late April. With the regulations published, I took the time to think from scratch. What are these rules? What could be a possible solution? That's when I developed the philosophy."
He further adds, "When I started at Aston Martin, I discussed this philosophy with the aerodynamicists and designers. We all agreed it was a viable proposal, and we've been following it ever since."
This process echoes Newey's move from Williams to McLaren in the 1990s, where he utilized his break to conceptualize the MP4/13, a double title-winning car in 1998.
The Challenge of New Regulations
While Newey's idea for the 2026 Aston Martin is well-conceived, he acknowledges that it's not a guaranteed success formula. He draws parallels with the 2022 rules reset, where teams started with diverse designs before converging on a successful approach. "Whenever there's a big regulation change, there are huge opportunities. It's about who spots the right one. Only time will tell which solution proves correct."

Newey has embraced his role at Aston Martin, and driver Lance Stroll has noticed his deep involvement in understanding the car's performance. "Working with Newey is inspiring. He has a unique understanding, almost like a driver's perspective, of what makes a car great. It's special to have those conversations with him about the car's strengths and weaknesses."
The Quest for Championship Glory
Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll has invested significantly in building a championship-winning F1 team. Despite their state-of-the-art facilities at Silverstone, a double world champion in Fernando Alonso, and the addition of Newey, they are yet to secure a race victory, let alone a title, in the Aston Martin era.
Newey suggests that while their facilities are 'second to none', certain aspects of the team and its processes are still evolving. "Lawrence's vision and investment have given us the best F1 facilities, but it's just one part of the equation. The equally important part is the personnel and how they work together. That's where we're making significant progress."
