AI companies are destined to fail, but we can extract valuable lessons from their downfall. As a science-fiction writer, my role is to craft futuristic narratives that reflect our current techno-social landscape, questioning not just the functionality of technology, but also its societal impact. I don't predict the future; instead, I explore alternatives and challenge the notion that there's only one way technology can be utilized. The AI bubble, fueled by monopolies and the relentless pursuit of growth, is a prime example of this. Tech giants like Google, Meta, Apple, and Amazon dominate their sectors, creating a crisis when growth stalls. To maintain their growth stock status, they hype new technologies like AI, promising to disrupt labor markets and replace high-wage workers. However, AI cannot truly replace human jobs; it can only assist, often in ways that don't save costs. The real goal of AI hype is to keep investors convinced of continued growth, not to create viable products. This bubble will burst, leaving behind useful tools and skilled workers, but also a legacy of wasted capital and unethical practices. To combat this, we must challenge the myths surrounding AI, advocate for workers' rights, and push for regulations that protect creative labor. By doing so, we can salvage something meaningful from the wreckage of the AI bubble.
