As this interstellar wanderer approaches Earth, a team of scientists, led by NASA astrochemist Martin Cordiner, utilized the powerful Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile to analyze the gases emanating from its surface. What they discovered was extraordinary: an abundance of methanol and hydrogen cyanide, molecules crucial to the formation of life's building blocks.
But here's where it gets controversial... These molecules, while present in our comets, are usually found in trace amounts. However, in 3I/ATLAS, they are incredibly abundant. Cordiner explains, "Here we see that, actually, in this alien comet they're very abundant." The data from ALMA shows that both chemicals originate from the comet's solid core, but methanol is also released from icy grains floating in the surrounding dust and gas cloud. An astonishing eight percent of the vapor from 3I/ATLAS is methanol, approximately four times more than what is typically observed in comets from our solar system.

He adds, "It seems really chemically implausible that you could go on a path to very high chemical complexity without producing methanol."

Some scientists even propose that objects like 3I/ATLAS could have carried the ingredients for life to Earth long ago.
Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb, known for his controversial theories, responded to the new data with his signature boldness. He suggests that the anomalously large ratio of methanol to hydrogen cyanide production by 3I/ATLAS hints at a "friendly nature" for this interstellar visitor. While this interpretation is sure to spark debate, it adds an intriguing layer to the comet's story.
As scientists continue to study the comet's chemistry, telescopes across our solar system capture dramatic new images. NASA's Hubble Space Telescope photographed 3I/ATLAS from a distance of about 178 million miles, providing a second glimpse since its discovery in July. The European Space Agency's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) spacecraft also observed the comet between November 2 and 25, capturing it in a very active state after its closest approach to the Sun on October 30. An image taken on November 2 shows the comet glowing with a bright coma and displaying two distinct tails, one of electrically charged gas and the other of drifting dust.
These new images, along with NASA's release of never-before-seen photos on November 19, provide a fascinating glimpse into the mysteries of this interstellar visitor.
