CEDA's Cattle Expansion Product: Revitalizing Botswana's Livestock Sector | Vision 2036 & NDP 12 (2025)

Botswana's livestock sector is getting a major boost! The Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA) is stepping up to the plate, answering the government's call to revitalize the cattle industry. They've rolled out a new financing initiative designed to rebuild the national cattle herd.

This initiative, known as the Cattle Expansion Product Packages, is part of the A-Di-Tsale Product Suite. It's designed to tackle long-standing problems in the beef industry by focusing on several key areas. These include improving animal health, boosting reproductive performance, and ensuring better access to fodder and water. It also provides financial products specifically tailored to the unique cycles of livestock production.

Minister of Trade and Entrepreneurship, Tiroeaone Ntsima, has called this program a crucial national intervention. He sees it as a building block for transformation, fully aligned with the country's Vision 2036, NDP 12, and the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP). He emphasized that this product suite is the driving force behind the resurgence of Botswana's livestock sector. It aims to strengthen rural economies and reclaim a competitive position in both regional and global markets.

During the launch, Minister Ntsima also highlighted the new administration's commitment to creating a supportive environment for farmers. His Ministry is focused on cutting through red tape to make it easier to do business. This includes improving market access, preparing for exports, enhancing standards and quality control, and supporting various agricultural groups. The goal is to create a fairer, more competitive environment, free from unfair practices.

The Ministry plans to work closely with other key players, including the Ministry of Lands and Agriculture, the Botswana Vaccine Institute, the Botswana Meat Commission, and various farmer associations and cooperatives. This collaboration is crucial to ensure the program's success across all districts.

Acting Minister of Lands and Agriculture, Dr. Edwin Dikoloti, also shared that his Ministry launched its own A-Di-Tsale Programme in September. This program aims to strengthen the beef value chain through improved animal care and reproductive technologies. He noted that the goal is to increase productivity at the farm level and rebuild the foundation of the national herd.

But here's where it gets controversial... Some might argue that focusing solely on cattle might overlook other important aspects of the agricultural sector.
