The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is under fire from Styx's Dennis DeYoung, who has penned a scathing critique of the institution's practices. In a recent Facebook post, DeYoung, 78, expressed his frustration with the Hall's seemingly delayed inductions, which he believes have resulted in the absence of iconic musicians like Paul Rodgers from Bad Company.
"It's a sad reality that Paul Rodgers had to wait so long to be inducted that his health prevented him from performing. It's a shame! I would have loved to see him perform years ago, showcasing his incredible talent and proving that he truly embodies the spirit of rock and roll," DeYoung wrote.
But here's where it gets controversial... DeYoung goes on to suggest that the Hall's initial mission statement about eligibility is nothing more than a 'ruse and a joke,' designed to protect the personal choices of those in control. He questions the timing of inductions, wondering why some artists are only considered decades after their peak success.
"Making musicians wait until they're incapacitated or dead is a disgrace. The Hall's inability to let go of its prejudices is clear. They admit their mistakes, but only when it's too late. Have these artists suddenly become more popular? Absolutely not," he stated.
DeYoung's comments highlight a potential flaw in the Hall's induction process, raising questions about the timing and criteria for honoring musical legends.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite his criticism, DeYoung acknowledges that the Hall of Fame is the only one of its kind, and while it may not be the be-all and end-all, it still holds significant weight in the music industry.
"I want Styx to be recognized in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame because we deserve it. It's a bitter pill to swallow that we're not included. I know it might sound like sour grapes, but it's the truth," he said in a 2020 interview.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame has yet to respond to DeYoung's comments, but its website states that artists are eligible for nomination 25 years after their first commercial recording.
