In a thrilling start to the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace, Chris Dobey managed to push through a daunting situation to secure his place in the second round with a 3-1 victory against China's Zong Xiaochen.
Dobey, who made it to the semi-finals in the previous year, faced unexpected challenges from his opponent. Initially, the eighth seed had a strong opening set, but a series of missed doubles put him in jeopardy. This allowed Zong to even the score at 1-1, creating a tense moment that could have led to a significant upset in the tournament.
Despite continuing to struggle with his doubles during the fourth set, Dobey's opponent failed to take advantage of the opportunities presented to him. Ultimately, the experienced player managed to close out the match and secure his advancement.
In contrast, Scott Williams, another former semi-finalist, breezed through to the next round, defeating Paolo Nebrida from the Philippines with a commanding 3-0 score. Additionally, Justin Hood delivered an impressive performance as he swept past Welsh player Nick Kenny without losing a single leg.
The evening session promised more excitement as Alan Soutar faced a nail-biting challenge. He missed an astonishing 15 match darts before finally overcoming Teemu Harju from Finland in a sudden death leg. Soutar’s struggles were evident when he failed to hit his first 10 darts for the match in the fourth set, allowing Harju to clinch that set and mount a comeback after being two sets down.
In a dramatic turn, Harju found himself with four match darts while leading 3-2 in the deciding set but was unable to convert. In the end, Dundee's Soutar maintained his composure and nailed double 16 on his 16th attempt to secure the win.
As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on the reigning world champion, Gerwyn Price, who is set to compete against Czech underdog Adam Gawlas in the first round tonight.
