Sierra Space's Dream Chaser® has passed crucial pre-flight tests at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, paving the way for its highly anticipated first free-flight mission. The spaceplane underwent Electromagnetic Interference and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMI/EMC) testing, ensuring it can withstand the harsh electromagnetic conditions of space travel. The Dream Chaser® also showcased its prowess during rigorous tow testing, where it was pulled by a Freightliner Cascadia truck at high speeds. The spacecraft further proved its mettle by successfully exchanging telemetry and commands with Mission Control, a key capability for real-time control during flight.
As the testing campaign culminated, a post-landing recovery rehearsal was conducted, ensuring the safe retrieval of the vehicle and its precious payloads. With these achievements, the Dream Chaser® is poised for its final acoustic testing in December 2025, followed by modifications for national security missions in Colorado. These enhancements will showcase the spaceplane's adaptability and its potential to meet diverse mission demands, including those vital to protecting the nation.
Sierra Space is confident that the Dream Chaser® will embark on its inaugural launch to Low Earth Orbit in Q4 2026, fulfilling the CRS-2 contract with a runway landing at Vandenberg Space Force Base. This launch will be a significant milestone, demonstrating the spacecraft's reusability and versatility.
