Girard Water Main Break: What You Need to Know About the Boil Advisory (2026)

A significant water main rupture in Girard has been successfully fixed, but residents in the vicinity of Beechwood Avenue—specifically between Park Avenue and Churchill Road—are currently required to boil their water before consumption, as per the guidelines issued by the Girard Water Department.

Earlier today, Girard Water Superintendent Mike Scoville confirmed that the repair work was completed by 6:30 PM. During this repair process, a total of 44 homes located along Beechwood Avenue experienced a temporary disruption in their water supply, lasting about an hour.

Now, a boil advisory is in place for those living in the affected area. Scoville explained to 21 News that this advisory is purely a precautionary measure prompted by concerns over possible contamination that could have occurred during the depressurization of the water lines. He specifically recommended that residents should only use cold water from their taps for boiling purposes, as utilizing hot water could inadvertently draw out any potential lead contaminants from standard faucets.

According to guidelines from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), simply boiling water is effective at eliminating bacteria but does not remove lead.

The Girard Water Department has urged residents to bring their cold water to a vigorous rolling boil for at least one minute before consuming it. This process is crucial for ensuring that any harmful bacteria are eradicated. Alternatively, using bottled water during this advisory period is also advised for all activities including drinking, making ice, washing dishes, preparing food, and even brushing teeth.

To lift the boil advisory, two consecutive negative water samples must be collected. Scoville noted that a sample was taken Monday evening, and it typically takes about two to three days to receive results, thus determining when the advisory can be lifted.

This situation highlights the importance of understanding local water safety protocols and remaining vigilant about potential risks during infrastructure repairs.
