Keeper Review: A Haunting Tale of Romance and Horror
Horror cinema has often mirrored the toxic romance found on cursed dating apps, with movies like 'Fresh', 'Companion', and 'Together' showcasing the darker side of relationships. 'Keeper' takes this premise and elevates it to a whole new level of eerie horror. The film follows Liz (Tatiana Maslany) and Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland) as they embark on a weekend getaway, but as the movie progresses, their seemingly idyllic relationship takes a sinister turn.
Director Osgood Perkins masterfully builds tension through his unique shot choices rather than relying on micro-aggressions or backstory. The audience is immersed in a world where Liz and Malcolm's faces are partially obscured, shown from odd angles, or framed in shots with an unsettling amount of headroom. This disorientation mirrors Liz's growing unease as she starts to hear faint noises through the house's vents.
