Mark Wood's Prospects for the Ashes First Test Brighten with Impressive Net Bowling
Mark Wood's chances of playing in the first Ashes Test are looking increasingly promising after an impressive display in the nets in Perth on Tuesday. The England paceman bowled a rapid spell, showcasing his potential to be a key player in the upcoming series.
Wood's last Test appearance was in August 2024, and he experienced tightness in his left hamstring during England's warm-up match. However, a scan cleared him of any serious concerns, and he participated in England's first training session at Perth Stadium.
Despite having a heavy strap on his left knee, which required surgery earlier this year, Wood demonstrated his prowess by bowling off a few paces and then building up to full speed. Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith, who faced Wood in the nets, praised his performance, stating, 'He was absolutely rapid today. I can tell you that first hand. He's definitely one to avoid on the netting list. He was near enough full tilt, so it's good signs for us.'
The England team may announce their XI for the first Test against Australia on Wednesday. Wood is expected to be part of a five-man England pace attack on a lively surface. The West Australian newspaper even featured a picture of the pitch on its front page, calling it a 'green monster.'
The England squad seems set with ten players, including the regular top seven and the fit-again captain Ben Stokes. The other seamers in consideration are Jofra Archer, Brydon Carse, and Gus Atkinson.
If Wood is omitted, his place could be taken by fellow seamer Josh Tongue or spin-bowling all-rounder Will Jacks. Tongue expressed confidence in Wood's fitness, saying, 'If his body's all good and the management think he's good to go, I don't see why not.'
Wood, known for his speed, has a history of injuries. His latest absence from the Test side began with an elbow problem 15 months ago. When he returned to white-ball cricket earlier this year, he suffered a knee injury that required surgery.
Despite the risk, England is keen to include Wood for his pace, previous success against Australia, and the importance of starting the series well. If England fields five seamers, Wood's workload can be managed by the other four bowlers. However, playing him later in the series when a spinner is needed would be challenging, as there are only three other pace bowlers available.
Wood was part of a five-seamer lineup in England's warm-up game against the England Lions last week, bowling eight overs in two spells of four on the first day. Although he left the field midway through the afternoon session, he received a clean bill of health after a scan on Saturday morning.
Australia, meanwhile, faces challenges with their squad, as captain Pat Cummins and pace bowler Josh Hazlewood are expected to be absent from the series opener. Brendan Doggett is in line for a debut, and Cummins, recovering from a back injury, has been bowling in the Perth nets, aiming to return in the second Test in Brisbane on December 4th.
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey acknowledged Cummins' progress but suggested he will remain on the sidelines for the first Test, focusing on managing his workload and ensuring no further injuries from bowling.
