Unveiling Namibia's Green Revolution: A Journey Towards a Sustainable Future
In a bold move to address environmental challenges, the Namibia ReThink Waste GreenCycle Expo took center stage in Windhoek, shedding light on innovative solutions to combat waste and protect our planet.
The Power of Local Innovation
This two-day forum, held from Thursday to Friday, showcased the incredible potential of waste transformation. From art installations to manufacturing demonstrations, the event buzzed with creativity and a shared vision for a greener tomorrow.
Toini Kauluma, the expo's founder, highlighted a critical issue: "While Namibia boasts a reputation as one of Africa's cleanest countries, it faces a hidden economic challenge. Valuable recyclables often end up buried in landfills." This expo, she emphasized, was a direct call to action.
Empowering Local Heroes
Elias Nghifindwako, a passionate advocate for environmental protection, shared his journey. Through the School Environmental Clubs, he inspires young Namibians to collect waste and transform it into valuable products. "The real impact," he said, "lies in changing learners' mindsets towards environmental protection."
And here's where it gets controversial... Nghifindwako believes that while their solutions are powerful, they often go unnoticed by the public. "That's why we're here," he added, "to showcase our work and spark a conversation."
The Eco Tyre Project: A Tireless Effort
Atushe Heita, the founder of the Eco Tyre Project, took recycling to a whole new level. His enterprise transforms old tires into innovative products like bricks, car mats, and athletic track surfaces. "Tires, if left in landfills, can take over 50 years to decompose," Heita explained, "causing immense environmental damage."
Bridging the Urban-Nature Divide
But the expo didn't stop at waste transformation. It aimed to reconnect urban dwellers with nature. Kauluma emphasized, "In urban settings, people often overlook the impact of waste beyond what goes down the drain. Education and awareness are key to bridging this gap."
A Call to Action for Economic Growth
Namibian Minister of Urban and Rural Development, Sankwasa James Sankwasa, underscored the importance of environmental solutions for the country's economic growth. "Environmental sustainability is intertwined with sectors like agriculture, tourism, and extractive industries," he said.
