Robert Suárez is changing teams for the first time in his professional career. After declining his player option with the San Diego Padres and entering free agency, the standout closer agreed to a three-year, $45 million contract with Atlanta, a deal the Braves publicly confirmed on Thursday. The report was initially broken by Jeff Passan of ESPN, who highlighted the move as a significant acquisition for Atlanta.
According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, Suárez is slated to function as the Braves’ setup man, pitching ahead of closer Raisel Iglesias to bolster the late-inning structure. This return to the bullpen setup role marks a strategic shift aimed at maximizing late-inning leverage for Atlanta.
Suárez previously signed a five-year, $46 million pact with the Padres in 2022. With two years and $16 million remaining on that contract, he opted out to explore free agency—a decision that ultimately paid off with interest from other clubs, including Atlanta.
The Braves deal follows another strong season for Suárez. He posted a 2.97 earned run average, a 0.90 WHIP, and a career-best 2.3 Wins Above Replacement. He saved 40 games for San Diego—the most in the National League and the second-most in baseball—while recording 75 strikeouts to 16 walks over 69.2 innings pitched.
Suárez earned his second straight All-Star selection in 2025, stepping in as an injury replacement for Atlanta’s Chris Sale. Even amid trade rumors tied to the Padres ahead of the deadline, San Diego chose to keep him, only for him to depart as a free agent shortly thereafter.
Now 34 years old, Suárez enters a new chapter with the Braves, transitioning into a critical eighth-inning role on a team aiming to maximize its late-inning strength. This move underscores Atlanta’s plan to leverage one of the game’s top closers-turned-elite setup specialists to sharpen their late-game dynamics.
