Sydney Fish Market vendors brace for challenges as the new facility opens, while the ferry wharf remains a future project.
The long-awaited Sydney Fish Market (SFM) is set to open on Monday, six years behind schedule and over budget, with vendors and visitors warned to expect teething issues. The redevelopment, initially budgeted at $250 million and due in 2020, is expected to attract up to 6 million visitors annually.
The mood among vendors is a mix of excitement and apprehension as they prepare for the move to Blackwattle Bay in Sydney's inner west. About 30 retailers will open on Monday, with others following in the coming weeks.
Master Fish Merchants' Association president Kerry Strangas highlights the immediate challenge for traders: the logistics of moving perishable products. The new market spans four floors, with five goods lifts to move seafood to the parking level. An outdoor loading dock accommodates larger trucks.
SFM assures stakeholders and the NSW government that the new building is fit for purpose. They plan to work closely with site users to address any teething problems and have secured additional resources for support during the initial operation phase.
Despite initial challenges, SFM emphasizes the new market's purpose-built nature and significant improvement over the previous site, with temperature-controlled loading dock areas and trading floor to preserve product freshness and quality.
However, the ferry wharf and service remain a future project. The NSW government plans a $30 million commuter wharf to aid visitor access, currently in the design stage with ferry services not expected until 2027. In the interim, visitors will rely on light rail services and bus routes, with increased frequency to accommodate the expected influx.
Local rowing clubs, using Blackwattle Bay for nearly 150 years, express concerns about ferry traffic disruption. Glebe Rowing Club captain Mark Tietjen emphasizes the need for regular ferry schedules to avoid disruption. Despite concerns, rowing groups welcome the development, aiming for cohesive integration with the new facility.
