A violent clash between Muslims and Christians erupted in Yumbe, Uganda, on November 4, 2025, following a protest by Islamist leaders over pork sales near a mosque. Five Christians lost their lives, and 44 others were injured. The unrest began when a video circulated, showing Sheikh Kasim Abdalla of Munir Mosque calling for Islamic unity to 'cleanse Yumbe of unholy practices' and mobilize Muslims to protest pork sales. The demonstration started peacefully but turned violent as protesters attacked Christian-owned shops and homes. Abdalla's inflammatory speech incited his followers, stating, 'Yumbe was dedicated to Allah from the beginning. We cannot allow pork shops to operate here. Every Muslim youth must rise and defend the honor of our faith.'
The tragic consequences of the protest included the deaths of Jackson Lameriga, Collins Chadiru, Recheal Anyandiru, Philemon Okou, and Ben Gracious Padi. Nsubuga, a witness, recounted seeing Padi being stoned to death by Muslim protestors while he preached Christ on the streets. The attack is the latest in a series of persecution incidents against Christians in Uganda, despite the country's constitutional and legal protections for religious freedom.
Security forces intervened, using tear gas to disperse the rioters, but residents reported live rounds being fired into the air. Several church buildings and Christian-owned businesses were vandalized or looted. The community is now fearful, with Christians expressing concerns about their safety. The government is being urged to provide protection for Christian communities in Yumbe, ensuring their safety and justice for the victims.
